Why iPhone Cases Turn Yellow — and How to Prevent It

You bought a clear or transparent case for your iPhone, and after a few months, it’s unrecognizable—yellowed, with a dirty tint that won’t come off no matter how much you clean it. It’s one of the most common and most-searched-for problems with phone cases, and the explanation is simpler than it seems. In this article, we explain why this happens, what you can do to slow down the process—and when it’s really time to replace the case.
Why does the iPhone case turn yellow?
The yellowing of phone cases isn’t your fault or necessarily a sign of poor quality—it’s pure chemistry. Most clear and transparent cases are made of TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane), a flexible, lightweight, and impact-resistant material. The problem is that TPU has one weakness: it reacts poorly to prolonged exposure to certain substances.
The main culprits are:
Ultraviolet (UV) radiation Sunlight is the biggest enemy of TPU cases. UV radiation breaks the polymer’s chemical bonds, causing an oxidation reaction that manifests visually as a yellowish tint. The longer the case is exposed to the sun—even inside a car or near windows—the faster the process progresses.
Heat Heat accelerates chemical reactions in TPU. Heavy use of your phone, charging it for long periods, or leaving it in the sun during the summer heats up the case and accelerates the material’s degradation.
Skin oils and sweat Your hands transfer natural oils, sweat, and residues from creams and sunscreen to the case. These chemical compounds react with the TPU and contribute to yellowing—especially in areas of frequent contact, such as the corners and the bottom.
Natural aging of the material Even without any of these external factors, TPU ages. It is an inevitable process—the only question is how quickly it happens.
💡 Cases made of rigid polycarbonate (hard plastic) and leather are much less prone to yellowing, precisely because they do not use TPU as their main material.
How long does it take for a book cover to yellow?
It depends on the material and conditions of use, but on average:
| Terms of Use | Time until visible yellowing |
|---|---|
| Normal use, without direct exposure to sunlight | 6 to 12 months |
| Intensive use, frequent sun exposure | 2 to 4 months |
| Stored in a drawer, unused | 12 to 24 months |
| Cover with UV protection | 12 to 18 months |
Cases from unknown brands or of inferior quality may yellow within a few weeks because they use lower-quality TPU with fewer protective additives.
How to prevent your iPhone case from turning yellow
There’s no magic solution that can completely prevent yellowing—it’s an inevitable chemical process. But you can significantly slow it down by following these steps:
Avoid direct exposure to the sun. Don’t leave your phone in the sun—whether in the car, on a patio table, or at the beach. Even a few minutes of intense exposure each day can speed up the process. If you spend a lot of time outdoors, consider using an opaque or solid-colored case.
Clean the case regularly. Skin oils are one of the main causes of yellowing. Clean the case at least once a week with mild soap and water to remove built-up residue. Check out our article on how to clean your iPhone case for a complete guide.
Wash your hands before using your cell phone. This is especially important after applying sunscreen or moisturizer, or after eating. These products can be particularly harsh on TPU.
Avoid keeping your phone in hot pockets. Your jeans pocket can get quite hot in the summer. If possible, keep your phone in a cooler fabric pocket or in a bag.
Choose cases with anti-UV or anti-yellowing treatment. Some high-quality cases contain chemical additives that slow down the oxidation of TPU. They are usually labeled as "anti-yellow" or "anti-UV." They are slightly more expensive but last much longer.
Choose polycarbonate cases or alternative materials. If yellowing bothers you a lot, the ultimate solution is to switch materials. Cases made of rigid polycarbonate (such as InstaCase’s Premium Glossy cases), leather, or Alcantara do not yellow—and retain their original appearance for much longer.
Can existing yellowing be removed?
That’s the million-dollar question. The honest answer: partly yes, completely no.
Surface yellowing—caused mainly by skin oils and dirt—can be reduced through cleaning. Structural yellowing, however, which results from the chemical degradation of TPU, is irreversible.
Here are some things you can try to reduce surface yellowing:
Baking soda and hydrogen peroxide method:
- Mix one tablespoon of baking soda with a few drops of hydrogen peroxide (10-volume, available at pharmacies) until you get a paste
- Apply it to your hair and leave it in the sun for 1 to 2 hours—the combination of UV light and hydrogen peroxide has a lightening effect
- Gently scrub with a toothbrush and rinse thoroughly
- Repeat if necessary
Isopropyl alcohol method:
- Moisten a cotton ball or cloth with 70% isopropyl alcohol
- Rub the surface of the cover in a circular motion
- Rinse with water and dry thoroughly
These methods can significantly improve the appearance, but results vary depending on the degree of yellowing and the specific material of the cover.
When is it really time to replace the cover?
If the yellowing is severe and does not improve with cleaning, the TPU has structurally degraded. At this point, the case is not only aesthetically compromised—it may also be losing its protective properties, since the hardened material absorbs fewer impacts.
Replacing the cover is the most practical solution and often the most economical one. A good cover costs between €20 and €30 and lasts for months—the cost per day of protection is minimal.
The best option: covers that don't yellow
If you want to avoid this problem entirely in the future, the choice of material makes all the difference. At InstaCase, our Premium Glossy cases are made from glossy polycarbonate —a rigid material that doesn’t undergo the same oxidation process as TPU and retains its original appearance for much longer.
In addition, clear polycarbonate:
- It's easier to clean—fingerprints wipe off with a simple cloth
- Keeps colors vibrant and prevents fading
- Provides reliable protection against drops and everyday hazards
- It always looks like a high-end product, even after months of use

Summary
The yellowing of iPhone cases is caused by the chemical degradation of TPU due to UV radiation, heat, and skin oils. You can slow this down by cleaning the case regularly, avoiding sun exposure, and choosing cases with UV protection. If the yellowing is already severe, cleaning can improve the appearance but won’t completely reverse it. The definitive solution is to opt for cases made of polycarbonate or other materials that don’t yellow.
