You looked at your AirPods and saw a red light flashing—and now you’re not sure what to do. It’s normal to feel a twinge of worry. The good news is that in most cases, the solution is simple and quick. In this article, we explain exactly what each type of red light on your AirPods means and how to fix the problem step by step.
What does the red light on AirPods mean?
AirPods and their charging case use a system of LED lights to indicate their status. The light may appear on the charging case (between the two AirPods, on the front) or on the earbuds themselves, depending on the model.
The red light has two main meanings:
Battery very low or dead This is the most common reason. When the red light appears on the charging case, it means the case’s battery is almost empty—usually below 10 to 15%. The solution is simple: connect the case to the charger.
Pairing issue or system error If the red light flashes steadily even when the case is charged, this may indicate a firmware error or a pairing issue with the iPhone. In this case, you’ll need to reset the AirPods.
AirPods Light Color Guide
To help you better understand what your AirPods are signaling, here is the complete color guide:
| Color of light | What does that mean? |
|---|---|
| Flashing white | Ready to pair with a new device |
| Green (closed box) | Fully charged AirPods |
| Green (open box) | Fully charged battery |
| Amber / Orange (sealed box) | AirPods charging (less than 100%) |
| Amber / Orange (open box) | Box with less than a full load available |
| Red / Amber flashing | Battery very low or system error |
| No power | AirPods that are out of battery or in sleep mode |
Step-by-step guide: How to fix the red light on your AirPods
Solution 1 — Carry the box (the most common)
If the red light comes on when you open the box or when the box is closed:
- Connect the charging case to a Lightning or USB-C cable (depending on the model) plugged into an outlet or computer
- Please wait a few minutes—the light should turn amber (charging) and then green (charged)
- If the light doesn't come on at all after plugging it into the charger, try a different cable or a different outlet
If the device isn't charging at all, there may be a problem with the cable, the outlet, or the device's charging port.
Solution 2 — Reset your AirPods
If the red light flashes repeatedly and persistently even when the device is charged, the problem is likely a software issue. Resetting the device resolves the vast majority of these cases:
- Place the AirPods inside the charging case and close the lid
- Please wait 30 seconds
- Open the box lid
- On your iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth
- Tap the ⓘ icon next to your AirPods
- Tap " Forget this device " and confirm
- With the box lid open, press and hold the setup button on the back of the box for 15 seconds, until the light flashes amber and then white
- Bring the iPhone case back near the open lid to pair it again
After the reset, the light should stabilize and the abnormal behavior should disappear.
Solution 3 — Check the AirPods' firmware
Sometimes outdated or corrupted firmware can cause the lights to behave strangely. To check and update:
- Place the AirPods in the charged case and connect it to the charger
- Keep your iPhone nearby and connected to Wi-Fi
- Firmware updates happen automatically in the background—there is no manual update button
- Wait 15 to 30 minutes and see if the problem persists
Solution 4 — Clean the charging contacts
Dirt, dust, or debris on the gold-plated contacts inside the charging case can prevent the AirPods from charging properly, causing inaccurate battery readings.
- Use a dry cotton swab or a microfiber cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol
- Gently clean the gold-plated contacts inside the case where the AirPods sit
- Also clean the contacts on the base of the AirPods themselves
- Let it dry completely before using it again
The red light is flashing, but the AirPods are working normally—is this a problem?
Not necessarily. If the AirPods play sound just fine and only the case has a red light, it’s very likely that the case is simply running low on battery. Charge the case and the problem will be solved.
If your AirPods have sound issues, turn off on their own, or have trouble pairing while the red light is on, then you do have a problem that requires the reset described above.
When should you contact Apple Support?
If none of the solutions above resolve the issue, there may be a hardware defect. Consider contacting Apple Support if:
- The charger won't charge even when using different cables and outlets
- The red light remains on after multiple resets
- One of the AirPods isn't charging (the light is green on one side and red on the other)
- The AirPods are less than 1 year old — they are covered by Apple's 1-year warranty
To check your warranty, go to checkcoverage.apple.com and enter the serial number of your AirPods (you can find it in Settings → Bluetooth → ⓘ → Serial Number).
How to Avoid AirPods Battery Problems
A few simple habits can extend battery life and reduce the likelihood of problems:
- Always keep your AirPods in the case when you're not using them—the case automatically charges the earbuds and protects the contacts
- Charge the device regularly without letting the battery run completely out—frequent small charges are better for the lithium-ion battery than full charge cycles
- Avoid extreme temperatures —both intense heat (such as a car left in the sun in the summer) and extreme cold cause batteries to degrade more quickly
- Clean the contacts from time to time to prevent dirt buildup that interferes with charging
- Use a case for your AirPods case to protect the contacts and keep debris out
Protect your AirPods with a high-quality case
The AirPods charging case is a vulnerable spot—the gold contacts inside and the lid are the parts that suffer the most from drops and daily wear and tear. A good case protects the case from scratches, drops, and dirt, keeping the contacts clean and functional for much longer.

Quick summary
A red light on your AirPods almost always means the charging case is low on battery—the solution is to plug it into the charger. If the light keeps flashing even when the case is charged, reset your AirPods by following the steps above. In most cases, the problem is resolved in less than 5 minutes.
